Terms of use

Last updated 1 September 2026

These are the terms for using Purpose. We've written them in plain language, and we mean them to be read.

What Purpose does

Purpose introduces experienced professionals to organisations that want their experience, and gives both sides a place to agree the work in writing.

We are not your employer, and we are not a party to the work you agree with someone else. What we do is make the terms clear and keep the record of them.

What we ask of you

Describe your own experience accurately, and say what you can genuinely take on.

Treat other people here with the courtesy you would want. We remove accounts that don't.

Keep what you learn in a piece of work confidential unless the other side has said otherwise.

Agreements you make here

An offer becomes an agreement only when the other side accepts it in writing on Purpose. Until then, nothing is binding.

Where money is held against a step of work, it is released when that step is approved. Fees are set out on the fees and pricing page.

Ending your account

You can close your account whenever you like. Work already agreed carries on unless both sides end it.

We may suspend an account where someone is put at risk, or where the law requires it. We tell you why unless we are not allowed to.
