I retired as a division head and have been asked to consult two days a month. I have no idea what to charge and do not want to insult anyone, including myself.

Take your final annual salary, divide by 220 working days, then add half again. That covers the fact you carry no benefits and no notice period. Round to a number you can say out loud without flinching.

Ask what the work is worth to them, not what your time cost your old employer. A two-day review that saves a bad hire is worth a great deal.
